Palava Player

We seem to have a weird bug in the machine here. If either of the flash players beneath do not play please try this link: Palava Arts Player

see the second instance of the player at: nickroll.com

To put your files into the palava player use ARIA as follows:
Log in and go to the Web Site menu. At the top of the page you'll see the Uploads link; go there and then:

  • Click on Browse.. to select the file from your computer
  • Select a Destination from the drop list - probably 'User Music' - this will help keep your music together in one place.
  • Enter a short name for reference
  • in the drop-list on the right select the mp3 file type
  • Click the Upload button and be patient.

When the upload is complete the screen will blink and the progress bar in your browser will vanish.
You should now be able to see the file listed in the display beneath the upload form.

Now go to the Files menu on the left - click and select the file from the list on the left.
Make sure that the Filetype is set to mp3, click on the properties link and enter a duration in the format hh:mm:ss
Find the drop list at the bottom of the screen and select 'Publish on Site'
Click on the Save button (top right)
No look at your web page where the player is displayed and refresh. All the files should apear in the list.

Palava Arts Track Player

Making mp3 Files and Putting 'em up on ARIA.

The Player is designed to deliver mp3 files along with their name, description and duration through the browser without the facility to save the file to disc. This therefore protects the copyright of the artist.

Tracks are released to the player by ARIA according to the publishing setting against each one.

I've been using iTunes to turn the files into mp3 format before uploading them. I've found that if you use the wrong setting you can end up with double time playback. I've used 24 kbps, 11.025 kHz for some of the files on the palava-arts site and this is ok. Also notice that iTunes won't let you specificy mono or stereo when the rates are set as above - so set it to auto and you get a result. I found that 56kHz gives double time playback.
Also, for more bandwidth-hungry playback try 128 kbps and 44.100 kHz. You'll find that the 24 k, 11kHz setting is about one fifth of the size of a file compressed at 128 k, 44.1 kHz.

File size:
The default upload file size limit is 2 Mb on all the servers running ARIA. Somewhat frustrating, however no bad thing since it keeps the ISP bill down for bandwidth.
Remember that not all people browsing have the luxury of broadband so, since they are probably only samples, I suggest keeping the file size lower by using a lower quality mp3 compression.

iTunes mp3 settings for player

Confusing or what!
iTunes uses the Import settings for Export as well.
So to compress the files for your player look 'em up in the iTunes library, select them and then ctrl-click and then 'convert selection to mp3'.

When iTunes has done it's stuff you can get on with the uploads. It's a good idea to keep the listing in iTunes so that you can look up the duration of each tune.
